The Last Abbot of Reading

A play by Beth Flintoff
Reading Abbey, 2021

Hugh Cook: An unknown monk living quietly at Reading Abbey until a chance encounter with King Henry VIII results in an unexpected promotion. Suddenly propelled into a world of intrigue, politics and danger, Hugh must balance his beliefs with the orders of the formidable King. As England breaks away from Europe, he has to make an impossible choice.

On the 900th year anniversary of the Abbey, this show was a sellout.

‘This atmospheric, strongly acted show is a model of theatre rooted in and illuminating its locality.’
Mark Lawson, Guardian
